The Vegan Gift Checklist — 15 Things Vegans Don’t Want

Below are the fifteen gift mistakes vegans recognise from years of polite smiles, alongside the plant-based swap that turns a “oh… thanks” into an actual win. Bookmark this before Christmas, birthdays and secret santas — it's the short-cut to looking thoughtful.

  1. 01

    Anything with honey

Granola, herbal teas, cough drops, face masks — honey slips into “healthy” products constantly. Real honey is animal-derived; vegans skip it entirely.

The swap Maple-sweetened granola, date-sweetened teas, vegan lip balms. shop the category →

  2. 02

Wool socks, silk scarves, down jackets

Cosy is not the same as vegan. Wool, silk, down and cashmere all come from animals, and “cruelty-free” brands don’t always mean animal-free fibres.

The swap Cotton, TENCEL, bamboo and recycled-poly knits. shop the category →

  3. 03

    Real leather (even second-hand)

Leather wallets, belts and bags are the classic “vegan gift gone wrong”. If it displays genuine leather, it’s off the table.

The swap Mushroom leather, cactus leather, microlam and other 100% vegan leather alternatives. shop the category →

  4. 04

    Gelatin gummy candies

Most gummies, marshmallows and jelly sweets are built on gelatin — crushed animal bone and tissue. The vegan versions are usually labelled loudly.

The swap Pectin-based vegan gummies, vegan marshmallows, oat-milk chocolate bars. shop the category →

  5. 05

    Beeswax candles & wraps

Beeswax candles and beeswax food wraps are sold in “eco” sets everywhere, but beeswax is an animal product. Soy and coconut wax are the vegan candles.

The swap Soy candles, coconut-wax candles, plant-based wraps. shop the category →

  6. 06

    “Vegetarian” labelled gifts

Vegetarian includes dairy, eggs and — in many products — honey. “Vegan” is the only label that rules out animal products completely.

    The swap Explicitly “vegan”, “100% plant-based” or “dairy-free + egg-free + honey-free” products. shop the category →

  7. 07

A big tub of mixed “snacks”

Mixed snack crates often contain whey powder, milk chocolate or honey-glazed nuts hidden in the fine print.

The swap Purpose-built vegan snack boxes — the whole crate is plant-based by design. shop the category →

  8. 08

    Beauty products “tested on animals”

Animal testing is still legal in much of the world. If the brand doesn’t say cruelty-free, assume the worst — vegan ingredients can still be animal-tested.

The swap Leaping Bunny or PETA-certified cruelty-free beauty sets. shop the category →

  9. 09

An “experience” that includes animal venues

Zoo tickets, horse-riding vouchers and circus seats land badly for most vegans. Check what the experience involves before you book it.

The swap Cookery classes, spa vouchers, concert tickets, comedy nights. shop the category →

  10. 10

    Cheese “for his tastebuds”

Dairy cheese boards are the classic omnivore assumption. Hard skip for vegans.

The swap Vegan cheese boards — cashew, coconut and oat-based, most under $30. shop the category →

  11. 11

    Leather-bound journals & decorated stationery

Fancy journals and diaries frequently use leather covers or silk bookmarks without shouting about it.

The swap Vegan-friendly journals, spiral-bound notebooks, cork notebooks. shop the category →

  12. 12

Gift sets with “may contain” animal products

Cosmetic gift sets with milk, lanolin or collagen “extracts” are more common than you’d think.

The swap 100% vegan skincare kits — the label decides, not the packaging aesthetic. shop the category →

  13. 13

Hot-cocoa sets without checking the marshmallows

Classic cocoa mixes contain dairy powder, and the marshmallows are almost always gelatin-based.

The swap Vegan hot cocoa sets with plant-based marshmallows and oat-milk powder. shop the category →

  14. 14

Something labelled “plant-based” that isn’t vegan

“Plant-based” marketing is looser than “vegan” — some products labelled plant-based still add honey or dairy extras.

The swap Stick to explicit vegan-labelled products when in doubt. shop the category →

  15. 15

Anything “for the vegan he’ll never be”

Books about quitting veganism, “humour” about meat cravings, and gifts that mock the lifestyle aren’t gifts — they’re debates.

The swap Funny vegan gifts that poke fun from the inside: sarcastic mugs, cheeky tees. shop the category →
